Gliders

Gliders – I used to feel sorry for the glider pilots who went aloft so that fighter pilots could practice attacks on their gliders. There was a scare that gliders might be used in an invasion of England.

A glider got airborne in the corridors of towering cumulous cloud formations and Bullfrog took the Squadron up to practice attacks on the glider which was soaring gracefully. He ordered “A” Flight and “B” Flight to carry out separate line astern attacks. After a bit, these attacks became quite boring so, for a lark, each attack got closer and closer to the glider. When each one of us commenced flying directly in front of the glider in order to watch the glider up heaved by the wicked energy of the Spitfires’ slipstreams, Bullfrog called a halt to the proceedings. I supposed that the poor glider pilot, with the wet and dirty trousers, had had it too. No more attacks were ever carried out by our outfit.
